Notes and thoughts about my training, both in the gym and on the roads and trails of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina

Ouch!
Worked on my legs and shoulders at the gym last night, and I'm a bit sore today! I should probably do more strength training! One of the exercises Heather showed me last night looked so simple, but was tough for me! I got on one of the steps heading upstairs, and on the balls of my feet, tried going up on my toes, then letting my heels go below the step. The was an unexpected balancing challenge for me! I need to keep working on that. My calves were really burning by the end, too.

Getting to the gym more often
Tonight will be my second time to the gym this week. :-) I read something on the internet this week about suggestions for getting to the gym more often, and one of the tips that hit home with me was signing up for classes--aerobics, spinning, whatever you're interested in. The article also suggested planning your trips to the gym at least a week in advance, if not a month in advance, and put them on your schedule. That really hit home with me, so I'm going to do that this weekend. Good timing, with Saturday being July 1.

Cardio
Last night I stayed 16 minutes on the elliptical, one mile. That's the longest stretch I've had in a little while. Was proud of myself for getting out the door after 8:30 PM to go work out. Also had to go grocery shopping, which I did after working out. Also had some cleaning to do. Gosh, getting everything in can be draining.

Saturday workout
George and I went to the gym together Saturday evening, which was nice. I did some cardio before hitting the hot tub and pool. I was a little sore yesterday, more sore than I should've been, as I didn't do THAT much cardio. I am working back up to 30 minutes at a time.
I want to work out at least threee times this week.

Wanting to work out more
Last night I had another strength training session, so I'm a little sore today! Talked with Heather about how to get to the gym more. She suggested lunch time (not really feasible) and right after work, as in having my workout clothes in the car and working out before I go home. Not there's an interesting possibility. Part of my problem lately is that I'm so wiped out after work that, once I get home, it's hard for me to get back out again, especially for a hard workout at the gym. I need to change the way I think about that. I want a body that's in better shape and in better health.

Back to the Gym
Went to the Fitness Center yesterday and did some cardio before getting into the pool and hot tub. Felt great to get back over there. Would love to get three gym visits in this week.

Small world
Last night I had dinner at Elmo's Diner with a new acquaintance named Tina. We met through Exercise Friends, and decided to meet in person to get to know each other a little better. It turns out we have similar goals, as she'd like to work up to a marathon as well. She lives here in Durham too, so we're planning to stay in touch, and maybe even walk together some. Maybe we can walk/run in some local races together too!

Weekend update
I had a good workout last night at Capital Fitness in Chapel Hill. Would've preferred exercising closer to home, but the one nearby was closed. This morning I stopped and signed up for another personal trainer session with Heather on Wednesday.

More trips to the gym
Having been posting here as much, but have been going to the gym a little more. Last night I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, then did some reps on a machine called the Butt Blaster (gotta love that!), then some crunches on the core ball. Feel a little sore, but a good sore, this morning. George went with me, and we did the pool and hot tub afterward. All fun.

PT session
Last night I had a trainer session with Heather, the first one in about a month. I'm sore today! Whew! Felt good, though!

Crazy schedule
I know, I know! I've been quiet here of late. My schedule after work has been bizzarly (is that spelled right? looks wierd!) busy. On nights when I don't have to be somewhere, I find myself wanting to "nest" a bit, even with the "longer" days. Part of the nesting, though, includes spring cleaning, which I've done a little.
I did get back to the Fitness Center over the weekend. Eventhough it was a short workout, it was some exercise, nonetheless. I look forward to exercising again tomorrow night, as a meeting I thought I had is actually 2 weeks away! What a relief, as I had a meeting last night, another meeting tonight, and am meeting Nanako for dinner on Thursday!

Trainer session
Last night I worked with Heather, and we concentrated on my back and biceps, since my legs were still a little sore. Also did 7 minutes of cardio on the treadmill. Trying to simulate walking more.

Hot Tub
Last night I wnt to the Fitness Center, but pampered myself in the pool and hot tub instead of working out. I was very sore, but am feeling much better today. Tonight, it's back to working out.

The Cary Road Race!

Here are pictures of George and me at the beginning of the Cary Road Race on Saturday, April 8! I've been working toward this for so long, that Race Day was a little bittersweet. George and I got there early, so we had a chance to walk around a little, chat with some other racers, and watch some of the 10K, which started earlier. The race, itself, was challenging for me, and I wish I could've been more ready. I'm glad I did it, though! Some of the other racers were very encouraging, too. I like the camraderie.
Now I'm looking forward to my next race!

Tomorrow's the day!
The Cary Road Race is tomorrow! Yippee! Unfortuately, there about an 80% chance of rain tomorrow. Ick! I'm going anyway.

Strength Training
Last night I had a strength training session with Heather, did upper body, so I'm a bit sore today. Didn't do any cardio afterwards, as it was getting toward 8:00 and I hadn't had supper yet. Had to rush home from work as it was and rush to the gym. Lots of rushing these days. Tonight I have one meeting, tomorrow night I have two. Getting harder these days to find time to exercise, clean house, shop for groceries or anything else, and to just relax.

Back on the elliptical
Did 30 minutes on the elliptical last night, felt great to get back on it for a good stretch! :-) I can't work out tonight (another meeting), but have another personal trainer appointment tomorrow night.
Had an hour-long massage on Saturday, thanks to Mom. It felt wonderful!

Back to the gym, and the scales
I finally made it back to the gym, and got on the elliptical for 10 minutes. It was a wimpy workout, but getting back to the gym was the big hurdle. Now I feel like I can get back into the swing! Only thing is, I have meetings every night NEXT week! (That was part of my problem LAST week!) That worries me, as I'm still participating in the Cary Road Race on April 8.
In other sorta bad news, I've regained 4 lbs, but am still down 15. Need to chip away at the pounds again!

OK, a little off-topic!
In the absence of the normal exercise this week, I decided to explore my "power color" in the last post! (Perhaps I should get a running outfit in teal!) Discovered a cute website called Blogthings , where you can take funky little quizzes and add the results to your blog. One Blogthing I tried earlier told me that the Brady I'm most like is Jan. Interesting choice, which I can see in some ways, but not in others.
Meanwhile, I missed the men's basketball game last night that ended Duke's run for the season. The Duke women's basketball team is still in the running, though.
Okay, more exercise and 5K training is planned for the weekend. Stay tuned!
